connecting the tubes

Ventilations from an engineer — Stephen Crosby is an Internet engineer and explorer of the worldwide series of tubes

Hey, I’m Stephen Crosby. I’ve been building software professionally for about 20 years now, mostly web platforms, APIs, and the kinds of systems that have to work reliably at scale. I live in Santa Barbara, California with my family.

These days I’m a Senior Software Engineer at Dropbox on the DocSend team. I’ve had the chance to architect products that drove millions in new revenue, lead organizational shifts toward API-first design, and mentor engineers on building sustainable, maintainable systems. The work I find most satisfying tends to involve untangling complexity and leaving things better than I found them.

Before Dropbox, I spent a few months at Google working on internal developer tooling for Google Assistant. It was a fascinating look inside a legendary company, but I learned pretty quickly that it wasn’t the right fit for me. Sometimes you have to try something to know.

Prior to that, I was at SecureDocs building document storage and contract management systems. Small team, high quality output. I designed serverless workflows, built GraphQL APIs, and got our CI pipeline down from 90 minutes to 15. At RightScale (now Flexera), I led teams, built identity and authorization services, and learned what it means to write software that actually scales. I started my career at The Fresno Bee, building newsroom tools for election results, weather data, and crime maps.

In 2014, I co-founded Branded Crate, a small app development shop here in Santa Barbara. Running a company taught me things about business and client relationships that I wouldn’t have learned otherwise.

Beyond the Day Job

I’m a big believer in open source software. I’ve contributed to various projects over the years and you can see what I’m tinkering with on GitHub. A lot of my side projects involve taking things apart to understand how they work. I’ve reverse engineered IoT devices, built binary clocks, and spent more hours than I’d like to admit staring at decompiled firmware. I find this kind of exploration genuinely fun, even when it leads nowhere useful.

I earned my private pilot certificate a few years back. Flying has a way of demanding your full attention, which I’ve come to appreciate. When I’m not at a computer or in the air, I’m probably working on my house or my car. I love to build and improve physical things. I’m an Eagle Scout and still enjoy time spent outdoors with my son.

I care about building things that last, understanding how systems really work, and leaving code better than I found it. If any of that resonates, feel free to reach out.
